Tween Bedrooms- A Tween’s View

Tween Bedrooms- A Tween's View Earlier this month I had my 11 year old niece spend a day's work experience with me which was rather fortuitous as I have recently been approached to design a couple of teen/pre-teen bedrooms and it is a long time since I was that age. Reyne is far better placed to know what a teen wants, so I asked her to give the teen view on what makes a fabulous bedroom. Naturally I had a lot of questions for her- not least of all was am I allowed to use the word Tween or is that totally not cool (am I allowed to use cool?)? I feel the pressure so over to Reyne in her own words- (a little foot note to clear up any confusion- Reyne is my maiden name. I am one of 3 daughters and with no one to carry on our name we have clung onto our name in some way- I named my company Reyne Design, one of my sisters has kept her surname and my other sister named her beautiful daughter Reyne. The name will live on in one way or another.) Hi my name is Reyne. I’m not going to lie,...

5 Common Interior Design Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

5 Common Interior Design Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Yves Saint Laurent said "Fashions fade, style is eternal" and this is absolutely true. However, regardless of how your home is decorated there are a few common mistakes you might be making that is stopping your home from being stylish. Here I look at 5 mistakes that if rectified will boost your home into the high style stakes. 1. Badly hung pictures and artwork I hate artwork, pictures and mirrors hung too high. Not only does it cause neck ache or a need to stand on tip toes, it also destroys the proportions of a room, bringing the ceilings visually lower and making a room feel oppressed. For artwork and pictures to be enjoyed they should be hung with the center at eye level i.e. 1500mm from floor level. Pictures hung too high- you'd strain your neck in order to look at them. 2. Island rugs Rugs that are too small. I see so many guilty of this- a small island rug in the middle of the sitting room with all the furniture neatly arranged around the sides and perhaps a coffee table on...

Before and After – A Surprising Interior Reconfiguration of a 1930s Semi

I don't think, from looking at the exterior of the property that you would ever predict what lies behind the front door. It really is very surprising and breathtaking. This has to be my most favourite project to date. What makes it my favourite isn't just the simple, unassuming exterior of the property that opens up into the most fabulous, surprising, modern home but more the fun client I worked with. Exterior of 1930s semi detached family home This is home to Loucas and his 2 young boys who have a passion for fantastic, fun and exciting design. They were prepared to radically change their initial plans for their extension and trust my ideas and the result is breathtaking. Originally a 2 bedroom, unremarkable home, the owner had planning permission to extend to the rear of the property and add a third bedroom to the first floor. Before- The chimney to the right was removed and now is part of the kitchen, where the extractor vent pipe is. This photo was taken, pretty much from the...
